The San Diego Police Department’s Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol’s (RSVP) You Are Not Alone (YANA) service is completely free. Volunteers make weekly visits to those who would appreciate or need to have someone check on their welfare on a regular basis. In addition, they may be able to suggest resources to meet individual needs. They also bring a caring attitude and a friendly smile!  There is no minimum age for YANA participants; younger persons may request YANA visits for a few days during post-surgical recuperation time. If you know someone who is elderly or disabled and also lives alone, RSVP volunteers can stop by and check on them regularly. To request this service, contact the Police Division in their area.

The JFS Fix-It Service plays a significant role in allowing older adults to remain in their homes safely. Many older adults live in San Diego County with the aid of spouses, family members, or friends as unpaid caregivers. The JFS Fix-It Service eases the burden for caregivers by providing additional resources to help the older adults in their care. Dedicated volunteers provide free, minor home-safety repairs and modifications, allowing older adults to maintain their independence and remain safely in their homes. All repairs are made at no cost to clients. Volunteers are trained to complete a four-point safety inspection of each client’s home before making repairs. All concerns are reported back to the JFS Fix-It Service Coordinator and addressed by our professional and caring staff.

The Fix It Program is available to adults ages 60 and older who reside in the North Central, Central, South, and East regions of San Diego County.

What the Fix It Team can do:

  • Install or fix doorbells, provide non-slip bath mats, minor electrical and plumbing work.
  • Home security and safety modifications including grab bars, security lights, hand rails, locks/deadbolts, and door/window screen repairs.
  • Install assistive devices such as shower chairs, toilet seat risers, and bedside commodes.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
