PARKINSON’S ASSOCIATION OF SAN DIEGO “GOOD START PROGRAM” SLATED FOR APRIL 16
Educational Seminar for Newly Diagnosed Parkinson’s Patients
The Parkinson’s Association of San Diego recently launched a new “Good Start Program” – comprehensive educational seminars designed for recently diagnosed patients and their care partners. Due to the overwhelming success of the first meeting held in March, the next seminar will take place on Monday, April 16. This 2-hour session will include a 90-minute presentation followed by Q&A. It will feature Dr. Abigail Lawler, Movement Disorders Neurologist, Neurology Center of Southern California, who will conduct a presentation. Other featured speakers will address Parkinson’s patient and care partner perspectives.
The seminar is offered at no cost to participants. Topics addressed include understanding Parkinson’s; choosing a physician; common medications; importance of exercise & nutrition; benefits of physical, occupational, speech and music therapy; legal issues; maintaining a positive attitude, research; and support services.
“A diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease is life changing and, for some, a frightening event. Accurate information about the disease and its treatment, as well as knowledge of available resources, can be of great assistance to those navigating this unexpected turn in their life’s journey”, said Marty Acevedo, person with Parkinson’s and Secretary, Board of Directors, Parkinson’s Association of San Diego.
It is estimated that 60,000 people in San Diego County alone either have or are affected by Parkinson’s Disease. Chris Buscher, Executive Director, Parkinson’s Association of San Diego, stated “Given the large population of Parkinson’s patients in our local area, we are extremely pleased to offer this vital program, with seminars planned at locations throughout San Diego County. We feel that the program will be invaluable for newly diagnosed patients at such a pivotal time.” Those who participated in the first seminar in March expressed a similar sentiment, providing comments such as “an extremely valuable program” and “I was touched and inspired.”
The seminar will be held on Monday, April 16 from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Wellness Center, Tri-City Medical Center, 6250 El Camino Real in Carlsbad. A light lunch will be provided. Free parking on-site. Registration is required by April 13. Space is limited. Please register at www.parkinsonsassociation.org or by calling 858-999-5671.
