PARKINSON’S ASSOCIATION OF SAN DIEGO LAUNCHES NEW “GOOD START PROGRAM” Educational Seminars for Newly Diagnosed Parkinson’s Patients
Solana Beach, CA – February 23, 2018 – The Parkinson’s Association of San Diego is initiating a new “Good Start Program”, a comprehensive educational seminar designed for recently diagnosed patients and their care partners. These 2-hour sessions include a 90-minute presentation followed by Q&A. They will feature speakers providing Parkinson’s patient, care partner and health care professional perspectives.
The seminars are offered at no cost to participants. Topics addressed include understanding Parkinson’s; choosing a physician; common medications; importance of exercise & nutrition; benefits of physical, occupational, speech and music therapy; legal issues; maintaining a positive attitude; research; and support services.
“A diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease is life changing and, for some, a frightening event. Accurate information about the disease and its treatment, as well as knowledge of available resources, can be of great assistance to those navigating this unexpected turn in their life’s journey”, said Marty Acevedo, person with Parkinson’s and Secretary, Board of Directors, Parkinson’s Association of San Diego.
It is estimated that 60,000 people in San Diego County alone either have or are affected by Parkinson’s Disease. Chris Buscher, Executive Director, Parkinson’s Association of San Diego, stated “Given the large population of Parkinson’s patients in our local area, we are extremely pleased to offer this vital program, with seminars planned on a quarterly basis at locations throughout San Diego County. We feel that the program will be invaluable for newly diagnosed patients at such a pivotal time.”
The first seminar will be held on Monday, March 12 from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Wellness Center, Tri-City Medical Center, 6250 El Camino Real in Carlsbad. Free parking on-site.
