Parkinson’s Association

Continues to Expand Programs and Welcomes New Board Members under New President Charlie Abdi

Press Release – Parkinson’s Association of San Diego

Solana Beach, CA – March 18, 2019 – Charlie Abdi, long time real estate executive of 35 years has taken the helm of the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego (PASD). Charlie is the Managing Partner of Finest City Realty Advisors, has been involved with the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego Board for many years, and was named the Association’s President in late summer 2018. Through the Board’s leadership, PASD has continued to expand its programs and services to the estimated 60,000 individuals in San Diego County who have or are affected by Parkinson’s disease. The Association has also recently expanded its Board of Directors, welcoming new board members Pat Collins, Tom Crane, Paul Dawson, Bob Dmytryk, Bob Dulich and Dijana Ristic. For over two years, Chris Buscher has served as Executive Director, guiding the association to provide the broadest possible support to the local Parkinson’s community.

PASD can provide these vital programs and services, in large part, through its fundraising efforts. On April 7, the Annual PASD ‘Step by Step 5k’ will be held at Liberty Station. CBS News 8 Anchor Carlo Cecchetto will emcee the event that will also feature speakers from the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Davis Phinney Foundation. An expo and entertainment are part of the festivities and the walk is dog friendly.

PASD is also planning a fundraising event to take place this fall. In October 2018, the PASD “Knock Out Parkinson’s” Gala featuring keynote speaker Rasheda Ali – daughter of Muhammad Ali – was an overwhelming success. This year’s event promises to be equally as popular. All funds raised from PASD events stay within San Diego County.

While PASD offers a myriad of programs a couple of key ones have gained significant recognition in the local community: The Good Start Program and Empowerment Day:

The Good Start Program was designed to assist those newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their care partners. This program is offered at no cost to participants and features a movement disorder neurologist, as well as speakers who address Parkinson’s patient and care partner perspectives, and legal issues. Over the past year, nearly 400 people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers/care partners have attended these seminars.

Empowerment Day is a very popular annual educational event offered by PASD in conjunction with its partners and sponsors. This event features a full day of presentations, education, and exhibits about Parkinson’s disease. The most recent Empowerment Day event – held in December 2018 – attracted over 350 attendees.

PASD is also a partner in the Parkinson’s Sidekicks Program – an intergenerational program developed by the Davis Phinney Foundation and Lundbeck Pharmaceuticals – that brings together youth and people with Parkinson’s to share their stories in fun and creative ways that promote mutual understanding and foster connection.

PASD is offering FREE rides (contributions toward the rides are welcome) to and from the ‘Step by Step 5k’ for those requiring assistance.
